Sunday Mixed Bag

We spent Sunday with my friend Bo and one of her co-workers from Shanghai. Started out with Breakfast in Aberdeen. Literally a "hole in the wall" restaurant. Menu was only in Chinese and written on the wall. They recommended the special for HK$17. It was actually multiple choices of meats and noodles or rice plus a drink.
I chose the egg, ham, and spicy beef with noodles and a coffee. My friends each had the same, but a different drink (a mixture of coffee/tea/milk over ice). It's supposed to be popular in Hong Kong, but I haven't tried it yet. I can tell you that this restaurant, I will not be back to, even if it was only us$2.5 for the meal/drink. Wasn't the best tasting food and I've been to cleaner places. Good thing Robin chose to skip breafast and stay at home. I would have heard about this place for a long time.

While in Aberdeen, I also like to stop and buy a few dim sum items from the local vegetarian dim sum restaurant. Lots of choices and so far everything is pretty good.
They also have good almond cookies, but I didn't buy any this visit.
Later in the day we stopped by the jook shop that I've been to before. It's always been good and I wanted to know how this compared to places in Shanghai. I was told that it was only HK$1-2 (us.15-.20)more than Shanghai, but just as good. I don't think the women cooking have ever had their pictures taken. The were really happy after I took it.
These are a local version of a chinese waffle. The vendor makes them to order. We ordered the mixed, plain & chocolate version. Took 3 min and we had a hot waffle in the shape of a mini egg carton.
Typical of any wet market are the butcher shops. Everything looks very fresh. The chicken stalls all have live chickens. Can't get any fresher than that. In 5 months, I still have not purchased or cooked any meat in Hong Kong. I just don't know what to buy and how safe it is. All the locals seem to purchase this way. With the high temperatures and my 45min-1hr bus ride home, I'm just worried about the meat spoiling. That also assumes I can communicate with the butcher on what part of the meat I want and how much it is.
.

I knew this wasn't a good food day for Robin, so sometimes it's so nice to have a McDonalds in the building where we catch our bus back home.
