Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

Took a mini vacation to Borneo in July. Borneo is the 3rd largest island in the world. Parts of Indonesia, Brunei, and Malaysia are all on Borneo. We stayed in the city of Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia at the Shangri-La Tangjung Aru.
We arrived late in the evening to our hotel.

For our 1st meal that evening we walked 15min down the road to a group of local outdoor food stalls. This was a very local place. No tourists, no english menus, and didn't recogonize much of the food or drinks. We were just hoping it was edible and that we didn't get sick. Food turned out really good. I had the special fried rice with sometype of dried fish and a mango drink

Robin had a melon drink and fried noodles. I think our entire meal with drinks cost less than $6US

Ate at this restaurant on the waterfront in the city center. Wasn't as good as the food stalls

This was one of the many islands that you could take a boat to.

A speedboat will take you to the remote islands. Takes about 10min and the boats leave every 30min.

We picked Manukan island. The speedboat stopped to let a german family off at the smallest island and then brought us to our island. I think we only saw 5-10 other people the entire day

The lonely planet book recommended an Indian restaurant in the city center. You tell them what you want to eat and they put it on a banana leaf. You eat everything with your fingers. I had shrimp and Robin had fish. The owner came to talk to us and recommended other foods to try. He suggested a dry spiced mutton dish. He told us that the mutton was flown in fresh from Kuala Lumpur. It was very good. This entire meal was also very inexpensive. I think everything you see was around $10US.
